If you thought the Stuttgart draw was stacked, move over for Madrid. The big blue clay event is loaded and the draw was unkind to a few former number ones.

Lost in the controversial blue clay courts is the fact that the Mutua Madrid is a highly-symbolic tournament for Rafael Nadal in 2012. Losses to Novak Djokovic on the North American hard courts were one thing; losing to him last year in Madrid had special significance.

Rafa has never lost to Spanish player in a tour final. In fact, he's now 44-6 against the majority of his compatriots. That's an astounding feat given the depth and quality of the players from that country. Here is a breakdown of his win-loss record against other Spaniards in the top 40:

The usual Federation Cup heroes emerge once again for their teams—Samantha Stosur, Petra Kvitova and Jelena Jankovic all stepped up and led their respective countries to victories. Rafael Nadal proved that the number 8 is indeed lucky. Not that he needs much luck! Speaking of needs, we all need a bit of Oxygen in our lives so please send your thanks to Caroline Wozniacki for being our provider.

Babolat's AeroPro and Pure Drive racquets have been among the top selling frames on the market for the last few years. With a 100 square inch head size and near 11 ounce weight, both Babolat racquets are well suited for a wide range of game styles and playing abilities. 10sworld World Head Coach John Hubbell takes both out for a test play and gives us his comments on this 10sworld.com racquet comparison.

With the upcoming Fed Cup semifinals this weekend pitting the Czech Republic against Italy, I thought it might be a good time to reflect on the winning ways of the "Little Italian That Could", Sara Errani of Italy.

Retirement in the WTA has been an odd, often sad display for big names in the past 10 years. Many have been forced to string their fans along while they tried to overcome injuries, while others made sudden exits from the game.

It was a busy week with 4 tournaments simultaneously going on. Juan Monaco and Angelique Kerber continued to show their impressive forms. 33-year old American journeyman, Michael Russell, impressed his hometown while Caroline Wozniacki tumbles a bit in hers. As always with the clay season, we familiarize ourselves with some new (and maybe not so new) names like Pablo Andujar, Albert Ramos and Sara Errani.

TSONGA ACCUSATIONS OF OFFICIATING BIAS BAD FOR THE INTEGRITY OF TENNIS

Disappointment after a tough loss is to be expected, but Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's statements to the press after his quarterfinal loss to Rafael Nadal at the Sony Ericsson Open went beyond the pale. I don't know how the ruling bodies feel about his accusations, but some form of response is certainly warranted.

The first official clay tournament kicked of this week in Charleston. Serena Williams and Lucie Safarova found their clay feet pretty quickly and Venus Williams had another solid showing for the second straight tournament. The men were off to serve their countries, kind of, in Davis Cup. John Isner, Juan Martin del Potro, David Ferrer and Tomas Berdych made their homelands proud while Radek Stepanek, well, not so much.

I had just completed my rounds of the practice courts and was heading towards the Lindt chocolate booth (air-conditioning and chocolate: what more could you ask for?) when a small group led by two security personnel passed by, walking back towards the courts. The man at the center of the group was none other than World No. 5 David Ferrer.

There were a few nice surprises in the second week of the Sony Ericsson Open. Andy Roddick played a great match to take out Roger Federer, Caroline Wozniacki seemed to have recaptured her form and Venus Williams continued to inspire. Agnieszka Radwanksa pulled off a big upset and Novak Djokovic returned to his usual self… you know, winning.

Maria Sharapova’s loss to Agnieszka (Aga) Radwanska in the finals of the Sony Ericsson Open should set off alarm bells for everyone in her camp. Given her growing number of losses in finals, including her embarrassment in the 2012 Australian Open final, has Maria lost the ability to win big matches?

Novak Djokovic (SRB) followed the same blueprint for his matchup against Andy Murray (GBR) as he’d followed the entire tournament: take it in two. Do not dawdle, do not second-guess yourself – just put your head down and get the job done. And he followed this blueprint for the final in exactly the same manner as he had in his quarter-final and semi-final matches: blaze through the first set, then get pushed to the limit in the second.
